The Dual-Layer Architecture

On September 29, 2026, financial market operator Central de Custódia e Liquidação de Títulos e Valores Mobiliários (CSD BR) partnered with Ripple to bring live securities record-keeping to the XRP Ledger (XRPL).

The initiative marks the first time an authorized national central securities depository has integrated a public distributed ledger into its regulated workflow to track investment assets in a live operational setting.

The pilot focuses on investment fund shares issued by Latin American banking group BTG Pactual. Under this architecture, CSD BR utilizes the XRPL’s native Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard to represent depository share balances.

Rather than executing an outright migration away from established channels, the platform mirrors ownership data onto the blockchain in near real time.

This creates a synchronized, tamper-evident audit layer that institutional participants can query directly to reconcile ledger entries against official registry databases, significantly cutting down on manual verification delays.

Safeguards and Compliance Controls

Central to the rollout is the preservation of statutory oversight. CSD BR, an infrastructure entity recognized by the Central Bank of Brazil, retains full legal authority over primary registry entries, physical custody, and settlement operations.

The technical environment operates under strict gatekeeping. Access to the replicated onchain environment is restricted to verified banking and corporate partners that meet local Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) standards.

Depository administrators hold the technical capability to pause transfers, restrict unauthorized holders, or enact transaction clawbacks if instructed by regulatory or judicial authorities.

By leveraging Ripple’s enterprise custody toolset alongside XRPL’s native rule sets, the framework allows asset managers to maintain strict legal compliance while testing distributed auditability.

Clarifying the Multi-Trillion Scale

Initial reports drew attention to the broader volume associated with the market operator, which oversees more than 22 trillion Brazilian reais (equivalent to roughly 4 trillion U.S. dollars) across its aggregate registry services.

However, market analysts and project leaders have noted that this figure reflects the overall valuation handled by CSD BR’s traditional depository network rather than the amount actively minted onto the blockchain. The XRPL rollout is a focused operational deployment involving selected BTG Pactual fund tranches.

Furthermore, participating corporate entities interact with the mirrored infrastructure without needing to speculate in or maintain substantial reserves of the native XRP digital asset.

Roadmap for Native Issuance and Credit Assets

Project coordinators view record mirroring as the foundational step of a multi-tiered expansion. As institutions gain familiarity with the ledger’s verification speeds, the consortium plans to test native onchain security issuances and secondary transfers between approved counterparties.

Subsequent stages are slated to evaluate large-scale domestic fixed-income instruments, notably Certificates of Real Estate Receivables (CRI) and Certificates of Agribusiness Receivables (CRA).

The development roadmap also includes zero-knowledge and enhanced data-confidentiality modules to protect institutional privacy, establishing a template that could eventually be deployed across cross-border financial markets.
