Solana-Based Tokenized Fund Pilot

In August 2026, Shinhan Asset Management—the group’s fund management arm holding approximately 133.6 trillion won ($96.6 billion) in assets under management—signed a memorandum of understanding with the Solana Foundation, tokenization platform Etherfuse, and decentralized exchange Orca. The four-party agreement establishes a proof of concept aimed at creating a Korean won-denominated tokenized investment fund on the Solana public blockchain.

Shinhan Web3 Adoption with Solana and Visa

Designed primarily for international institutional clients, the proposed fund will invest in ultra-short-term domestic sovereign and corporate debt denominated in South Korean won.

The trial draws structural inspiration from BlackRock’s liquidity-focused BUIDL fund, utilizing smart contracts to orchestrate the complete lifecycle of tokenized real-world assets.

Within the testing framework, Etherfuse provides the underlying minting and token management infrastructure, while Orca assists in designing secondary market liquidity mechanisms.

The operational trial covers essential regulatory protocols, including identity verification, anti-money laundering compliance, smart contract auditing, and onchain distribution.

Multi-Chain Infrastructure Exploration

This trial follows an earlier deal signed on August 14, 2026, with blockchain platform Plume, alongside previous tests with the Canton Network in June. The multi-chain exploration reflects a deliberate approach to evaluate distinct technical environments ahead of full commercial deployment.

Strategic Visa Partnership for Won Stablecoins

Simultaneously, Shinhan Financial Group expanded its payments footprint by entering into a strategic partnership with Visa on August 26, 2026. This collaboration focuses on building and testing end-to-end infrastructure for issuing, transferring, and redeeming won-denominated stablecoins using Visa’s global network.

Key units including Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Card, and Jeju Bank are participating in the initiative, which aims to integrate stablecoin settlement into card processing systems and explore artificial intelligence-driven payment mechanisms.

The project complements prior payment experiments, such as Shinhan Card’s April test run of stablecoin transactions on the Solana testnet and Shinhan Bank’s involvement in central bank deposit token trials under the Bank for International Settlements’ Project Agora.

Asia’s Web3 Shift

Shinhan’s aggressive push underscores a broader macroeconomic migration of institutional Web3 development toward Asian financial hubs. As traditional finance increasingly converges with decentralized infrastructure, capital and institutional initiatives are rapidly tilting East.

This trend is further evidenced by digital asset manager Psalion unveiling its $50 million Fund III in Singapore under Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) regulation.

Structured as a Variable Capital Company (VCC), Psalion’s vehicle explicitly targets real-world asset tokenization and enterprise middleware, highlighting how clear regulatory guardrails across Asian jurisdictions like Singapore and South Korea are accelerating the real-world deployment of blockchain technology.

South Korea Regulations

These corporate milestones coincide with sweeping regulatory changes in South Korea. The National Assembly passed legislative amendments regarding security token offerings on January 15, 2026, establishing a formal framework for distributed ledger registries.

Scheduled to take effect in early 2027, the updated rules permit licensed financial entities to issue and trade tokenized securities under clear oversight from the Financial Services Commission.

By aligning its technological trials with upcoming regulatory standards, Shinhan aims to deploy fully compliant digital financial products as soon as the legislative framework matures.
